Lead acid gives you about half its rated capacity. Lithium gives you 80 to 90 percent of it.

A 48 volt lithium pack is about 110 pounds. The lead acid it replaces is 378 to 496. You feel it in acceleration, hill climbing, braking, and what the cart does to your lawn.

What the job involves

When Jared says do not do it
He would rather lose the sale than put a premium pack into a cart that does not warrant it. He will tell you to stay with lead acid if:
- The cart is old and rough, or the frame is going
- It gets used a handful of times a summer
- You are planning to sell it within a year, because buyers do not pay back what the invoice cost

Common questions
- How much more range does lithium give?
- Around 70 percent more, for the same amp hour rating. Flooded lead acid can only safely give you about half its rated capacity before you start damaging it, while a quality lithium pack gives you close to all of it.
- How long do lithium golf cart batteries last?
- Depends on the pack. Bolt Energy rate theirs past 2,000 cycles and BATTLite past 4,000, with an 8 year warranty and a 10 year design life. Trojan rate a well watered flooded set at 1,200 cycles at 50 percent depth. So against lead acid that is genuinely looked after you are getting roughly two to three times the cycles, and a good deal more than that against a set that gets neglected, which is where you see people quote much bigger numbers.
- Is a lithium conversion worth it?
- It depends on use. For daily or near daily use, hills, hauling, or a cart you plan to keep, it usually pays for itself. For a cart used a few times a summer, or one you plan to sell soon, lead acid is the sensible choice. Jared will tell you honestly which side you are on.
- Does lithium work in cold weather?
- Better than lead acid, though no battery is immune to cold. Lithium holds its voltage under load until nearly empty, so a cold morning does not turn into the gradual fade you get from a lead acid pack.
