Every year it goes the same way. Nothing happens through September, then the first hard frost gets forecast and my phone does not stop for two weeks.
I am not complaining. But if you are reading this in early October, you are ahead of most people, so let me tell you how it actually works.
The window is shorter than you think
Winterization has to happen after you are done using the cart but before it gets properly cold. Around here that is a window of maybe four weeks, and everybody wants the same four weeks.
The Whitefish Lake Golf Club cart barn is the tightest of the lot, because those carts all need doing in the same stretch and there are a lot of them in one building. That is exactly why I run a dedicated package for that barn rather than doing them one call at a time.
What winterizing an electric cart actually involves
It is not just parking it. The pack is what you are protecting.
Batteries get checked and watered to the proper level with distilled water. Cables get looked at for corrosion and cleaned if they need it. Then, and this is the part people underestimate, the charger gets reset once a month through the winter so the pack does not slowly drain down and sulfate.
That monthly reset is the whole reason a seasonal package exists. Anybody can water a battery in October. Almost nobody remembers to walk out to a cold cart barn in February.
Gas carts are a different job
Different problem, same deadline. On a gas cart the enemy is fuel sitting in a carburetor turning to varnish. That is either a stabilizer treatment run through the engine, or draining it properly.
If you have a gas cart and you skip this, you will most likely be calling me in April with a cart that will not start. I would rather do the twenty minute job in October than the carburetor job in the spring.
What happens if you leave it
The honest version: most carts survive a winter of neglect. But every year I pull a few packs that are done for, and the story is always the same. Sat all winter, nobody touched it, plates were low going in, and now it will not hold a charge past lunchtime.
A set of batteries costs a lot more than a seasonal service does.
The cart barn package is its own thing
Worth being straight about this, because people ask.
The Whitefish Lake Golf Club cart barn package is only for carts kept in that barn. That is not me being precious about it. The price works because every cart in the barn gets done on the same day, in one visit, one after another. No driving between jobs, no separate trip for each cart. That is the whole reason it can be priced the way it is.
If your cart lives at home, in a shed, or anywhere else, I will happily look after it, but it is a separate trip and it gets quoted as normal service. Same work, different price, because it genuinely costs me a different amount to do.
So if you have a space in the barn, get registered. If you do not, call anyway and we will sort out a plan for wherever the cart actually sits.
